What professional development (for students or assessors) is required to use the tool? Students: are brought to computer labs to be introduced to portfolio (purpose and procedure). Students are checked periodlically. in 10th grade, students are introduced to the web design software and HTML templates available to them. Portfolio "folders" are assessed at the end of year (progress only).
Teachers: Were introduced to graduation requirements/outcomes. All projects/assignements must be built around these outcomes. Teachers were introduced to the portfolio methods and procedures.
To use the tool effectively, what else should the school have in place? The school must definitely have some type of outcomes or requirements in place. A computer network is not required, but makes the assessment and organization process much easier and more convenient.
If you haven't already addressed it, how does your tool help students or teachers demonstrate that they are meeting standards? Each artifact must be submitted with a corresponding set of reflection questions. The questions relate directly to the general stated outcomes for graduation. Teachers should be creating projects/assignments around these general outcomes.
What are your next steps in developing or implementing this tool? We plan to introduce the portfolio to each freshmen class. Our next step is to introduce the next "phase" to sophmores (class of 2008), the web design aspect of it. By the start of sophmore year, each student will have a minimum of 4 artifacts and reflections, a community service summary, an activities list, and a writing sample. The next step is to design a web environment to display the work.
