What purpose does your assessment tool serve? The XL Assessment Tools include self-assessments, online adaptive diagnostic assessments, individualized formative and summative assessments, and rubric, checklist and portfolio assessments for student performances and project based learning. Their purpose is to build and maintain an individualized student competency profile in core disciplines like Math and English Language Arts, and in Technology Competencies. The tools provide baseline data collection for research purposes, create individual learning plans and granular visualizations of student competencies for documentation of student progress and program analysis of the instructional program.

What professional development (for students or assessors) is required to use the tool? All PD required for use of the tools is embedded in the system

To use the tool effectively, what else should the school have in place? A thoughtful pedagogical process for action oriented responses (remediation and enrichment) by teachers to knowing in detail what individual students can demonstrate that they know, value and are able to do.

If you haven't already addressed it, how does your tool help students or teachers demonstrate that they are meeting standards? The visualizations of the individual competency profiles, SKILMAPS, and the individual learning plans all provide documentation of achievement.

What are your next steps in developing or implementing this tool? We are planning on more widespread implementation and usage and completing research projects to document the efficacy of the assessment, diagnostic, prescriptive, remediation, and enrichment components of the XL Assessment Tools.  These tools and the accompanying open architecture eLearning platform are freely available to states.
