What purpose does your assessment tool serve? |
Ongoing efforts and collaboration among the College of Education (COE) faculty at Arizona State University West (ASUW) have produced a program wide preservice teacher portfolio project. In preparation for implementation, each program (e.g., elementary and secondary) has aligned state teaching competencies and National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) with preservice program course requirements. After completing their program, preservice teachers have an archive of artifacts demonstrating their proficiency with these standards. Additionally, they have developed reflections on artifacts as well as course and field placement experiences. This archive of artifacts is organized in an electronic portfolio using web-based software (TaskStream), allowing students and faculty easy access and manipulation of documents. It illustrates the preservice teachers' learning over their teacher preparation experience. TaskStream's Web Folio Builder provides a seamless way for preservice teachers to create and share electronic portfolios that demonstrate their proficiency in the Arizona Professional Teaching Standards and the NETS-T. This easy command of the technology allows preservice teachers to focus on content, standards and reflection of teacher preparation experiences. Additionally, by selecting representative artifacts and composing reflections, preservice teachers produce showcase portfolios during their Student Teaching semester for presentations and interviews.
Using TaskStream's Web Folio Builder allows faculty to view student work and track student progress, as well as create portfolio templates and assess preservice teachers' portfolios online. TaskStream's Directed Response Folio reporting tools aggregate and disaggregate data for program evaluation and accreditation support. |

How long has this assessment tool been in use within your organization? |
We are currently in the third semester (year and one-half) of using Electronic Portfolios and TaskStream with all pre-service teachers as a required part of their teacher preparation experience. We first piloted the system with select groups of students and student teachers an additional two semesters (1 year) prior to implementing the project across all college programs. We worked on COE program alignment of APTS and NETS-T as part of a 1999 awarded Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology grant. |

Who is the audience for this assessment tool? |
Our project is designed for use with preservice teachers participating in ASUW teacher preparation programs. It could be easily adapted to use with other institutions or in-service teachers by building the portfolio around school, district, and/or state competencies. |

Preservice teachers' learning of electronic portfolios, reflection, and the Webfolio Builder tool are imbedded in course experiences and assignments. Faculty attend workshops offered during summer and at the beginning of each semester. Faculty learn TaskStream tools and have opportunities to collaborate in planning portfolio expectations for students. |

To use the tool effectively, what else should the school have in place? |
Administrative leadership and faculty buy-in have been key elements in our projects' success. While TaskStream has outstanding technical support, we have also relied on in-school support. Our college technology support person assists with faculty needs regarding technology and curriculum. Additionally, we have a point person(s) for each block (semester in preservice program) who provides assistance to students and faculty as well as has portfolio requirements imbedded in his/her course to establish accountability. |

If you haven't already addressed it, how does your tool help students or teachers demonstrate that they are meeting standards? |
The portfolio structure is built around state professional teacher standards. Preservice teachers make decisions regarding which artifacts to include and match artifacts to standards, including NETS-T. Many artifacts contain K-12 standards. Preservice teachers produce reflections to articulate the connections between learning experiences and standards. |
