How long has this assessment tool been in use within your organization? |
Since March 22, 2004 . |
||||||||||
Who is the audience for this assessment tool? |
The assessments in this tool are intended for 8 th grade students. Teachers use the results of the assessment to measure student technology skill level. Schools can access the tool to see aggregate data about the technology skill level of students in their school who have taken the assessment. |
||||||||||
What technology is used? (Please indicate hardware, software, and networking requirements) |
Schools only need Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher and an internet connection. The assessment uses Terminal Server, so none of the applications tested in the assessment need to be installed on the local machine. The applications tested in the assessment are Microsoft Office XP applications, namely Microsoft Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Internet Explorer.

What professional development (for students or assessors) is required to use the tool? |
There is no professional development required to use the assessment. It's designed to be easy enough to use by students and teachers so that they can start using it immediately upon accessing it on ISTE's Web site. When the assessment tool is released to the public this summer, ISTE's Web site will include some simple step-by-step instructions for teachers so that they can easily set up the assessment on computers in their class or lab. |
||||||||||
To use the tool effectively, what else should the school have in place? |
The assessment works best on PCs, although Macintosh computers that have Virtual PC for Macintosh installed can easily access the assessment as well. The school computers should have Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 or higher and should adjust their internet settings slightly to allow computers to download ActiveX controls. |
||||||||||
If you haven't already addressed it, how does your tool help students or teachers demonstrate that they are meeting standards? |
The tasks that students accomplish in the assessments map to ISTE NETS*S for eighth graders. When the pilot is public, the ISTE Web site will list the standards to which each assessment maps. When teachers receive score reports from their students, they will see in which areas or standards students are successful and in which areas they need more work. Teachers will be able to adjust each student's learning plan accordingly. |
