Our work on digital portfolios stems from David Niguidula's research, beginning over a dozen years ago at the
Coalition of Essential Schools. To implement portfolios successfully, schools need to address the following essential questions:
Vision: What do you want a student to know and be able to do?
Purpose: How do you intend to use a student’s portfolio?
Audience: Who will be the primary viewers of a student’s portfolio?
Assessment:
What will go into the portfolios?
How do you decide what makes good work for an individual student?
How do you encourage reflective feedback from both students and teachers?
Technology:
When will you integrate technology?
What hardware, software, and networking do you need?
Who will support it?
Logistics:
How will a student select work for the portfolio?
How will students gain access to the equipment?
How do you set aside time for student and teacher reflection?
When will all of this happen?
Culture:
What else has to change in the school to make the use of portfolios possible?
How will you create a culture of reflection?
