What purpose does your assessment tool serve?

IC³ is a global, validated, standards-based training and certification program for basic computing and Internet literacy.  It provides specific guidelines for the knowledge and skills required for basic use of computer hardware, software, networks and the Internet.  IC³ is a performance-based, entry-level technology assessment for teachers, students and administrators.  An independent review has found that IC³ standards are aligned with ISTE NETS-S and NETS-T.

Please indicate which category best describes your tool:

a.        __x__ Tools that allow users to ask questions of data (tools for collecting and disaggregating data, including surveys, self-reported data and standardized data)

b.       __x__ Tools for observation (including teacher observation and observation of student behavior or performance)

c.        __x__ Tools for reviewing student products (including electronic or digital portfolios)

Who is the audience for this assessment tool?

In order of priority: (1) Teachers, (2) Students, and (3) Administrators

What technology is used?

The IC³ exams can be administered via PCs in any proctored computer lab. The testing software is proprietary and can be downloaded at no cost from the Certiport website. The technology requirements to deliver IC³ exams can be found at the following Web address:

What professional development (for students or assessors) is required to use the tool?

IC³ exams are delivered through an authorized testing center to ensure integrity of exam delivery and result.  And IC³ training is delivered by an authorized instructor to ensure that courseware materials are authorized and instruction correlates directly with exam objectives.

To use the tool effectively, what else should the school have in place?

To effectively administer the IC³ program, schools should consider the following:

·                                        Being familiar with and adhering to NETS

·         Becoming an IC³ authorized testing center

·         Ensuring compliance with technology requirements

·         Purchasing IC³ authorized courseware

·         Having IC³ authorized instructors on staff

If you haven't already addressed it, how does your tool help students or teachers demonstrate that they are meeting standards?

IC³ is specifically designed to provide an outcomes-based assessment or certification of student and teacher knowledge of and proficiency with basic Internet and computing concepts and skills.

What questions would you like participants to address?

  • Are you interested in deploying an outcomes-based student assessment or certification program that is aligned with NETS, the value of which can be transferred via a digital transcript to institutions of higher learning or employment opportunities? (Yes/No)
  • What is the single greatest obstacle you would face if you were to deploy an outcomes-based assessment or certification solution designed to benchmark teacher and student proficiency with Internet and computing concepts and skills?
  • What is the role of computing certifications in K-12 academic institutions?
  • At what grade level should students demonstrate proficiency with basic Internet and computing knowledge and skills? (Select one: K, 1,2,3 . . . 12)
  • At what point in a teacher’s professional progression should he/she be required to demonstrate proficiency with basic Internet and computing knowledge and skills? (Upon graduation/As a student teacher/As condition of employment/As an inservice/CEU requirement/Other: ______________)
